About ENDS 101
For those of you
reading this blog, who are not aware of the ENDS 101 course offered by Texas
A&M, I will offer from my point of view a brief explanation.
The content and methodology of this class varies
drastically from the average college course. I am an aerospace
engineering major and similar to other technical majors I am accustomed to very
structured courses and curriculum with strict limitations. I and many others are educated in a focused
manner and deviation from this path is not encouraged. Papers are written to exact specifications or
they are considered unprofessional and are given low grades. Entire semesters are dedicated to deriving
equations and focusing on basic theory with little mention of practical or
creative application. Since elementary
school we are educated to think in one way in order to conform to the social
normality. The ENDS 101 course takes a
totally different approach. The class
teaches you to open your mind and allow for flexibility in how you learn, teach,
invent, present, innovate and in general work and live in life. The curriculum and the professor encourage you
to understand that we live in a three possibly four dimensional world and that
is how we need to view it. Our minds
need to constantly be open to new windows of creativity. In this age of rapid technological expansion,
the possibilities for innovation are growing exponentially. This assignment is a perfect example of new
windows and creativity. Using a blog
instead of the traditional format of submitting a report typed in a Word
document allows for the critique of a class to be seen by hundreds of people
other than just the professor.
Let me be clear that this class does not endorse
random creativity. Not every media is
appropriate for certain situations, a concept that is emphasized in this class.
Through the lectures and assignments in
this class Dr. Vanegas is teaching how to think differently against the social
norm.
The only way to move forward is to
never stand still. Creativity is the only way to keep walking.
